Trump Plagiarizes Joke About Melania Plagiarizing

Trump Plagiarizes Joke About Melania Plagiarizing
Date Posted: Tuesday, October 25th, 2016

Donald Trump had a really bad night during the Al Smith dinner, as he delivered one bitterly unfunny complaint about Hillary Clinton after another, and found himself getting booed by a room full of philanthropists and catholic priests. But if he had one good moment, it was when he delivered a joke that appeared to be about media bias and ended up being an acknowledgement that his wife Melania had plagiarized a Michelle Obama speech. But now it turns the joke itself was plagiarized.

Trump’s joke was a nearly word for word recitation of a joke which appeared in a cartoon for Roll Call months ago, penned by RJ Matson. “Michelle Obama gives a speech and everybody loves it,” the cartoon started off this past summer. “Michelle Obama gives a speech and everyone loves it,” Donald Trump started off last night.

“But Melania gives pretty much the same speech – word for word in some parts – and everybody hates it,” the cartoon went on. “My wife Melania gives the exact same speech, and people get on her case,” Donald Trump continued.

The apparent plagiarism was reported on-air by Rachel Maddow on Friday night during her MSNBC speech. And so the one moment of the speech in which Trump got a positive reaction turns out to have been a result of him plagiarizing a joke about his own wife’s plagiarism. Or as Maddow summed it up, “I told you that Donald Trump is having a really bad day.”
