Jesse Williams: Too Many Died For Us Not To Vote

Jesse Williams Too Many Died For Us Not To Vote
Date Posted: Friday, September 30th, 2016

Earlier this week, TRN brought you the story of Five Celebrities Who Say ‘Hold the Vote’ this Presidential Election one of whom was rapper/business mogul Sean “P-Diddy” Combs who says because he hasn’t seen the results he expected from the Obama administration, he feels, “The heat has to be turned up so much that as a community we got to hold our vote.” “Don’t pacify yourself, really revolutionize the game. Make them come for our vote. It’s a whole different strategy but I think we need to hold our vote because I don’t believe any of them”.  Other rappers  and entertainers like Meek Mill and Kendrick Lamar echoed the idea of not voting saying it won’t make a difference.

Many of our TRN supporters and readers spoke up on the issue as well…like Edgre who commented, “Black people died for our opportunity to vote. Now some uninformed rappers want us to stop.”…and Leonard Gresham who said, “It is imperative we as a people learn the importance of voting. The president is president of America, all of it, not just black America…Obama got a small amount of the white vote but won twice, this should tell us of the kind of voting power we have. White folks know and have done everything from voter suppression to murder to stop blacks and women from voting, this alone should make you want to vote. We can control the politics in our communities and elect/appoint representatives that will serve our interest. Remember the only thing most Politician’s care about is being elected and being re-elected, by controlling that we control them. Vote in every election especially local and midterms while at the same time organize ourselves.”

Now, actor/activist Jesse Williams wants to say something to Blacks, millenials and everybody else who says they don’t want to vote because it’s a choice between two evils, or their vote doesn’t matter or whatever else people are saying to convince themselves to sit out this Presidential vote.

In a PSA for super PAC Save the Day, Williams says, “If someone says, ‘Democracy is a sham, those people don’t speak for me…the system’s rigged,’ you say, ‘Vote. Someone says, ‘Well it doesn’t make a difference. This state is red, that state is blue. This thing’s already a lock. You say, ‘Vote.’ Someone says, ‘Hey, I’m making a statement by not voting,’ and then you say, ‘Well I can’t hear it.”

Williams further breaks it down for voters saying, “Democracy is not a sham. It’s a job. It’s our job. And it took goddamn long to get it to just let it slide.” A democracy that people elect not to be a part of when they don’t vote and if they don’t vote, they also don’t have a voice in the justice system by sitting on a jury, can’t vote in local elections like choosing the mayor or district attorney.  Williams ends the message by getting to the heart of the matter saying, “This is not about the White House. This is about your house.”

Here’s that Williams’ PSA in its entirety. Watch it…share it with someone and let them know that their vote only matters if they cast it…their voice is only heard if they speak up.
