A Twitter account for the music television network tweeted a photo of Kardashian sporting cornrows (they renamed it “boxer braids”) and said, “The A-list are loving boxer braids right now, so here’s an easy way to do them yourself:” and provided a link.
The article credits Kardashian for bringing the hairstyle back into fashion as it has been sported by her half-sister, Kylie Jenner, and other celebrities like Hailey Baldwin.
Now, although a scroll through Instagram feeds might show more and more stars donning the hairstyle, there is no denying the fact that Black girls have always been braiding their hair into cornrows for, well, since forever.
And so, the reaction was as expected. Twitter users were up in arms against the affront and implication.
Zaddy (@dontpunishme) wrote, “Y’all taking Black people’s BOX braiders, and calling them ‘boxER braids’?? For real?” and “If you’re gonna swagger jack Black hairstyles at least come up with a better name… But then again when have yall come up with anything original and creative?”
“This is a simple cornrow – not some boxer braid. Smh. Make up your own stuff – for once,” tweeted Candace (@claughinghouse)
“…they gonna take black culture then twist it into this ugly mess. Mkay, noted,” said akosua (@mamauhh_gif)
Ear Hustle 411 writer, Cee Cee, expressed her thoughts about how MTV UK gave credit to Kardashain for making cornrows popular by saying, “They go from calling Corn Rows to Boxer Braids as if changing the name of the style is supposed to somehow magically change the perception and history of the andocentric braids. Apparently they are trying to white wash the style and promoting Kim Kardashian as the founder of the braided style which was also worn by Hailey Baldwin and her baby sister Kylie Jenner. Although black girls have been rocking this style for centuries it’s now the Kim Kardashian hairstyle.”
