In a landmark civil rights case settled 53 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Loving — Mildred and Richard Loving — in their suit against Virginia, forcing the state to recognize their interracial marriage.
The Loving v. Virginia ruling granted them, and anyone in the country, the right to marry a spouse of a different race, overturning laws against interracial marriages all across the U.S. It was a historic moment for civil rights in America, but also a very personal one.
VICE News asked couples to mark the anniversary by explaining what the Loving decision means to them and their families.
