Mariah Carey s Journey To Love
Date Posted: Thursday, October 8th, 2020
With an undeniable talent and stunning looks, it's not unusual for Mariah to have an eligible bachelor by her side. Over the years, the singer has had two marriages, multiple engagements, and a few rumored romances. So, let's take a look at her romantic history and learn more about Her Vocal Highness.

THE UNHAPPY MARRIAGE WITH TOMMY MOTTOLA

In 1993, Mariah was at the top of her game but she also took a leap of faith when she married Tommy Mottola; a high-powered music executive at Sony Music. They had a 20 year age gap between them so he was more experienced than her. It was Carey's first marriage but the second one for Mottola. The two had a fairytale wedding but their union was a nightmare.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, the We Belong together vocalist, shared her experience. "There was a conscious effort to keep me as this all-American, whatever that means, girl. It was very controlled,” she recalled. “There was no freedom for me as a human being. It was almost like being a prisoner.”

Carey also revealed that she had to ask for permission to leave their home. The star admitted she felt overwhelmed as their relationship took a toxic turn. In his 2013 memoir Hitmaker: The Man and His Music, Mottola admitted that their relationship was bad.

“If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success.”

The couple divorced 5 years later. Mariah has shared that the marriage severely traumatized her and it still haunts her to this day. “My relationship with my husband was not a physical relationship. It just wasn't.... that relationship shaped who I am. It beyond shaped me," the pop star said, "I still have nightmares about it."

FEUD WITH JENNIFER LOPEZ

The pop divas have been embroiled in an infamous feud since the beginning of their stardom. Mariah has finally shed light on what exactly caused the rift between them. The singer revealed that her divorce from Tommy Mottola led to the falling out between the two stars.

Carey accused the music executive of trying to tarnish the success of her 2001 movie Glitter, as well as the films, lead single Loverboy. The Touch My Body singer claims that the plot included J.Lo's I'm Real single. Carey explained that Lopez had been involved in the making of Loverboy and that they sampled  Firecracker by Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Not too long after Sony put together I'm Real. In true Mariah fashion, she through in a bit of shade. “After hearing my new song, using the same sample I used, Sony hurriedly to make a single for another female entertainer on their label (whom I don't know).” The vocalist went
on to make her less than kind feelings about Lopez known when she wrote:

“And after all that s**t, ‘Loverboy’ ended up being the best-selling single of 2001 in the United States. I’m real.”

HOT ROMANCE WITH DEREK JETER

Toward the end of her union with Mottola, Mariah met the Yankee player Derek Jeter at a dinner party. They secretly began texting each other a while after. In an interview about her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer recalled the moment they shared a kiss at the top of his apartment building - it inspired her song, The Roof.

“I can never forget that moment,” Carey said. “I mean, it’s not like it was some intensely deep, intellectually stimulating — again, it was a great moment, and it happened in a divine way because it helped me get past living there, in Sing Sing, under those rules and regulations.” Sing Sing is a comparison of her home with Tommy and a prison in New York.

In the memoir, Carey describes visiting him at his New York apartment where they shared an intoxicating kiss. After her breakup with Motolla, the singer went to see Jeter, whom she shared that he was the second man she had ever been intimate with.

“Everything was so new and sweet, down to the smooth texture of his honey-dropped skin. It was how it was supposed to feel. It was so heady, so intoxicating, and I was so vulnerable. I was in touch with a fire I didn’t know I had inside, " Mariah recalled.

However, their relationship wasn't meant to be a long romance. "Very soon it became clear we weren't meant for the long run," she continues in her book. "He was in the right place at the right time, and he was there for the right purpose.”

DID SHE HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH EMINEM?

Fans of the star must be wondering about the infamous Mariah and Marshall Mathers (Eminem) battle. According to reports, in 2001 Mariah and Eminem met to discuss a collaboration for her Charmbracelet album, and shortly after, they began dating. The rapper revealed that the two dated for six months, Carey vehemently denied any personal involvement with Slim Shady.

"I hung out with him, I spoke to him on the phone. I think I was probably with him a total of four times. And I don't consider that dating somebody."

This caused a feud between the successful artists that even poured into their music. In 2009, Carey released her song Obsessed which has been viewed as a diss track towards Eminem, he responded by releasing his own diss record titled The Warning. Needless to say, the two have had a tumultuous history.

In light of Carey's memoir, the rapper is rumored to be anxious about what details the pop star may spill in her new book. A source close to the lyricist stated: "Eminem's Achilles heel has always been Mariah Carey. They have a very toxic relationship. He knows that Mariah is going to say very negative things about him. He is expecting the onslaught."

A PRIVATE RELATIONSHIP WITH LUIS MIGUEL

The music icon and the Latin singer Luis Miguel dated from 1998 to 2001 after meeting at a Christmas Party. According to sources, Mariah does not like talking about their relationship, close friends even claim that she got rid of all the pictures they had taken together.

In 2001, the singing sensation suffered a mental breakdown so her disdain for that period in time may be linked to her challenges. 3 years is a long time to be dating someone without them holding a significant place in your history, so many claimed that it was her most serious relationship after her marriage with Mottola.

MARRIAGE WITH NICK CANNON

During their time together, they were definitely one of Hollywood's favorite couples. In 2006, after a six-week whirlwind romance, the two tied the knot in a beautiful wedding in the Bahamas. The couple were head over heels in love and solidified their love with tattoos. Carey tatted Mrs. Cannon on her lower back while Nick inked Mariah on his shoulder.

Nearing their 3rd anniversary in 2011, the couple welcomed their twins Moroccan and Monroe. However, the next 4 years of their marriage would slowly take a downturn. In 2015, tea was spilled that Cannon filed for divorce from the Fantasy songstress. The split was amicable and the stars agreed to co-parent their children as best as they can.

According to insider, "they are in a great place and a real source of support for one another - plus a prime example of coparents should be."

It takes a while to move on from the heartbreak of a split but the two managed to find their way out of the difficulties. Today, they have a friendship and co-parent bond that can't be broken. Cannon told US, "we got our egos and this selfish behavior but when you put your children first, you understand that its all unconditional love."

REBOUND OR REAL LOVE?

Fans were stunned with this romance but Mariah seemed happy. After her divorce from Nick, the singer and business mogul James Packer were introduced by their mutual friend Brett Ratner in 2014. The two hit off immediately and made their public debut as a couple in Capri during 2015.

Not long after their romance bubbled, Packer popped the question with a $10 million engagement ring. A close source to the couple shared, "It's a match made in heaven because he's unafraid of an alpha woman. He's an alpha male."

In 2016, while vacationing in Greece, things between the couple went from sweet to sour. They had a huge fallout which led to their split. A representative from the businessman's camp told ET, "Mariah and James had a fight in Greece, and have not seen each other since. The fight was not about cheating allegations."

Shortly after, the couple officially broke up. Page Six revealed that Carey sold the 35-carat ring. “Mariah has been very vocal recently about her choice to move forward in her life surrounded by positivity,” her publicist told me. “That requires leaving emotional and material baggage behind, including an old engagement ring from an ex-boyfriend.”

A 13 YEAR AGE GAP ISN'T AN OBSTACLE

Mariah's current beau Brian Tanaka has been her backup dancer since 2006. Tanaka is 13 years her junior which isn't a factor in their chemistry. We all witnessed the sparks fly between the two during Mariah's E! docuseries Mariah's World. After her failed engagement with Packer, Mimi found comfort in Brian's arms.

According to sources, before Mariah and James ended things, the mogul was jealous of the relationship between Carey and Tanaka, maybe Packer wasn't too far off with his negative feelings about Mariah and Brian. In 2017, the new couple became more open about their relationship and since then, they've been rocking it like lovebirds.

THE OTHER MEN IN HER LIFE

Even though her love life has gained a lot of publicity from the media, Mariah says she's only had a few romantic relationships during her life. “I’ve only been with five people in my life, so I’m kind of a prude, honestly, compared to most others in the field,” the singer shared.

Despite her sharing this information, rumors have swirled about her dating a few other celebrities. Carey's reportedly dated the RnB singer Eric Benet between 2000 to 2003. She has also been linked to her Don't Forget About Us music video co-star Christian Monzon. Other reports claim that she dated the Swedish model Marcus Schenkenberg.

MARIAH'S BOND WITH HER KIDS

Mariah's kids Moroccan and Monroe are growing up in the lap of luxury, much different from the upbringing the pop star had. “It’s hard, but I try to keep them grounded so they don’t think everything is just handed to them,” Carey revealed. The kids have also changed her outlook on life.

"It used to be just about me," Mariah shared. "It used to be like, 'I've got to get my sleep, I've got to get my rest, I have to sing, and do this and that.' Now, it's really like, 'What are they doing? Are they asleep yet? What time are they getting up?'"

The little family has the cutest relationship and they often share their funny shenanigans on social media. Like enjoying one of Mariah's elaborate holiday parties or just goofing around with mom.
