Glassdoor.com, one of the leading job and recruiting websites in the world, recently published a report on the highest-paying jobs of 2018. The research analyzed 2018 salary reports submitted by employees, median annual base salary, the number of job openings available, and active job listings as of 7/19/2018. For consideration, a job title had to receive at least 100 salary reports from U.S.-based employees within the past year. C-suite level jobs were not included in this report.

The findings of the report indicate that a career in the healthcare or technology industries will earn you the heftiest paycheck. Thirteen out of the 25 jobs on the list were in the tech industry and five out of 25 of the jobs were in the healthcare industry. “The fact that employers are paying top dollar for many tech and healthcare jobs reinforces how demand for these valuable skill sets continues to outpace the supply of talent with these expertise,” said Glassdoor Economic Research Analyst Amanda Stansell.

One consideration that deserves acknowledgment when evaluating the results of the report is the gender pay gap that exists in industries like technology and healthcare. A 2016 study found that the pay gap persists in industries like information technology (IT). Men and women tend to hold different positions, which is partially what the pay gap in that field can be attributed to. One caveat to consider, however, is that when evaluating men and women with similar titles, experience, and credentials in the IT field, the men and women that were examined had very similar pay. Men and women tend to be attracted to different job titles within the industry, which may be a result of both learned gender norms as well as institutional barriers.

The gender pay gap for the top position on the Glassdoor report, physicians, is also growing. Female doctors earn about 27% less than male doctors. One issue is that in the medical field, salaries are not widely discussed. Without having an open dialogue regarding salary disparities, it is more difficult for changes to be made. It is crucial to continue having discussions about pay disparities in order to close the gap. Research like the 2018 Glassdoor report can help open the door to have these difficult conversations about pay inequities.
