Former GOP operative Steve Schmidt hit Donald Trump over reports that his use of unsecured iPhones often leads to his calls being intercepted by the Chinese.
“In what amounts to a marriage of lobbying and espionage, the Chinese have pieced together a list of the people with whom Mr. Trump regularly speaks in hopes of using them to influence the president,” the New York Times reported Wednesday — a report that drew the GOP operative’s ire.
“His incompetence is so great,” Schmidt said to MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace and assembled panelists, “he can’t competently make a cell phone call without endangering the national security of the country.”
Trump has denied the New York Times‘ reports about his use of unsecured phones and claimed he only uses “government phones” — but that didn’t stop the former GOP operative from shredding him for the content of the calls.
“He probably calls his friends up and it’s the same conversation we hear at the rallies, talking about the ‘fake news’ and the media,” Schmidt said. “It’s one long, giant pity fest and if that’s the case, I pity the Chinese listeners and Russian listeners who have to listen to this guy self-pity all day.”
