Donald Trump and his administration have a host of funny (but not “ha-ha” funny) ways of showing their appreciation for historically black colleges and universities. While Trump himself happily used HBCU leaders for a Black History Month photo op, his proposed budget did not live up to the promises he made. Neither did his cryptic questioning of the constitutionality of funding HBCUs.
On Saturday, Trump continued his strange pattern by proclaiming this week National Historically Black Colleges And Universities Week by making the HBCUs share their seven days in the spotlight with four other National Week proclamations, including proclamations for “Gang Violence Prevention” and drug abuse awareness. Here are the proclamation subject lines from Saturday (via email from The White House):
It's not unheard of for more than one subject to share a “Week,” but this is the first time Trump has proclaimed five weeks at once, and for whatever reason, it just happens to be for HBCU week.
Last year's HBCU week was in October.
