Officers attached to the Memphis Police Department are conducting investigations into a case in which Memphis Grizzlies announcer Rick Trotter was fired over “deception and moral failures of a s*xual nature.”
As investigations continued, officers managed to secure an arrest warrant against Trotter on Tuesday after it was found that the 40-year-old announcer was taking pictures at the Downtown Church without consent. It’s also reported that Trotter was “making upskirt videos of church members” at a time when the church services were ongoing.
WREG reported that back in May, Trotter was busted kneeling behind a woman and capturing a video using his cellphone, a video he stored in a church laptop.
The church later released a statement that read: “We, the elders of Downtown Church, are deeply saddened to announce that, effective May 27, Rick Trotter was terminated as an employee of Downtown Church. This was the result of deception and moral failures of a s*xual nature.”
The church noted that the discovery was quite devastating.
“We, as elders, have come around his wife and children offering spiritual, emotional and financial support. We will continue to support and encourage them, and we know the Downtown Church family will follow suit.”
In the statement, the church also said it has acted fast based on the information received thus far and advice from professionals. They’ve assured congregants that they’re “fully committed to operating with integrity and transparency.”
Although the Grizzles distanced themselves from Trotter, they only made their decision public after Trotter was arrested and his arrest made public.
“Rick Trotter is no longer affiliated with the Grizzlies organization. We have no further comment on the matter,” the team said in a statement.
Serving as an NBA announcer was such a notable achievement for Trotter. Before landing that position, his major experience was serving as a church worship leader. Trotter managed to beat dozens of other contestants to find his way to the final round.
He was held in police custody on $70,000 bond.
Trotter appeared in court on Wednesday and was officially charged with inappropriate filming of at least four women in church. As he was leaving the courtroom, he kept quiet as he trailed his attorney. However, his attorney Marty Mcafee spoke, saying, “What we have to say is we’re gonna see what the state has when it comes to evidence.”
