Admittedly, this presidential election has left a lot of people dazed and confused, but none are as confused it seems as Shad “Lil Bow Wow” Moss. The rapper, actor is causing quite a commotion on Twitter after saying in essence that he can’t really relate to the Civil Rights issues because he’s mixed.
Someone asked Moss who he would vote for in the upcoming Presidential election and here’s how Bow Wow responded. “I don’t really care because after I learned what I learned about politics. I just stay away. Let down,” We can all understand that statement especially after the circus we’ve witnessed going into this election. Bow Wow should have stopped talking there, but he went on to elaborate and that’s where the train went off the rails. Moss continued with “Man, I only believe what the eyes see. I’m mixed. I don’t know what my ancestors was [sic] doing. I only know what I see … I seen [sic] ‘Selma.’Was I related to anyone, no. I’m saying my moss side of family is not Black. Heritage different.”
Lil Bow Wow Moss also posted a picture of his Dad and added that his family is a mixture of White and Native American. He pointed out that he has cousins who have blonde hair.
If Moss’ little “I’m mixed” rant was a fishing expedition, he used the right bait because Twitter users were hooked and had plenty to say in response.
Everyone talks about White privilege and the problems it creates when one race thinks it is superior to another. When people toss out the “I’m mixed” card, are they just boasting of their heritage or is it the same as trying to invoke White privilege by saying ‘I’m better than you because my grandparents were White or my great, great grandmother was Native American’? Moss needs to study a little history and anthropology because every Black American can make the same claim to some degree because of slave masters raping Black slaves and fathering children.
Moss is saying “I can’t relate to Black issues”, but when he wanted to be a rapper, he could relate to Blacks and their money. Maybe he is mixed—Black and green because he certainly marketed himself to the Black community.
It’s sad to see Blacks still haven’t learned. Nobody is going to run your DNA or pull up ancestry.com when they meet Moss on the street. Just like Moss tried to explain that he only believes what he can see with his own eyes, most police officers, employers and court judges believe what they see as well. They see dark skin and decide right there that you are Black and some may decide on a few stereotypes that go along with the color of your skin.
Moss started this entire Twitter backlash by saying he wasn’t going to vote because he can’t relate to Black issues this political year. We’re voting for the President of the United States…not the new head of the NAACP. Race has been a primary issue in this election, but so has employment, the economy, climate change , defense spending, and the need to address problems within the criminal justice system. All of these issues relate to race–the human race, but maybe Moss can’t relate to that race either.
Moss may think he can’t relate to Black issues, but because of the color of your skin Mr. Moss,Black issues will relate to you.
