Last year, it was announced that Jay-Z was producing (along with a pre-disgraced Weinstein Company) a docuseries based on the life and death of Trayvon Martin. Having landed at the Paramount Network, the trailer for the six-episode series, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story is here.
It’s been nearly six years since 17-year-old Martin was murdered in a Florida suburb by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. His death ignited a much-needed national conversation about police brutality and the continual murder of black lives at the hands of police officers and gun-toting white men who often see little to no jail time for their crimes. “It took my son being shot down to make me stand up,” Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton says to the camera at one point during the trailer, amid footage of protests filled with signs carrying his face.
As teenagers continue to fight for more restrictive gun laws and cops who’ve killed innocent black men are continually let off the hook, Rest in Power is painfully relevant today. The series premieres July 30.
