“I came in the door. I said it before. I never let the mic magnetize me no more. But, it’s biting me, fighting me, inviting me to rhyme. I can’t hold it back. I’m looking for the line. Taking off my coat. Clearing my throat. The rhyme will be kicking until I hit my last note.” 30 years ago, those indelible lines introduced Eric B. & Rakim to the world, by way of their 1986 debut single, “Eric B. Is President.” Fast forward three decades later, to the most insane U.S. presidential election in recent history, and what better time for the dynamic duo of Eric Barrier and Rakim to reunite?
Start saving some extra money because Eric B., 50, and Rakim, 48, are planning a reunion tour. The hip hop team jumped on the group’s official Twitter account on Oct. 20 to tease a concert happening soon. “It’s official. You heard it here first,” the duo tweeted. “We are back.” This is SO exciting!
Although Eric and Rakim didn’t reveal any tour dates or locations as of late, they did note that they’ve already started to plan and prepare for the big return. “Preparations are under way for #EricBandRakim‘s return. It’s been a long time,” they wrote, before asking their fans for help. “Where do we jump off this new tour?”
Eric and Rakim first rose to the hip hop scene in the late 80s. Hailing from Long Island, New York, the duo quickly became one of the most influential DJ and rapping groups in music. After their debut single, “Eric B. Is President” in 1986, the two came out with their debut album, Paid in Full, in 1987. To this day, that album is known as a classic to many other artists in the industry. Eric and Rakim were also nominated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, although they didn’t manage to make it in the final selection.
