Pastor Steps From Controversy To Controversy To $4,000 Sneaker Controversy

Pastor Steps From Controversy To Controversy To 4 000 Sneaker Controversy

There’s no apparent end to controversies involving money and Pastor John Gray—one of President Donald Trump’s favorite Black preachers.

The celebrity pastor, who leads Relentless Church in Greenville, South Carolina, has found himself the object of ridicule over his expensive Air Yeezy 2s sneakers, according to the Daily Mail. Gray is one of several men of God who sport high-priced athletic shoes that retail in the area of about $4,000 and higher.

Rapper and producer Kanye West collaborated with Nike to create the Air Yeezy sneaker. The brand was first released in 2009, and the Nike Air Yeezy 2 released in 2012.

Gray can be seen in photographs on the Instagram account @preachersnsneakers, which raises lots of questions for folks who have trouble understanding why ministers would spend that amount of money on sneakers and how they could afford them.

Back in December, Gray defended an even bigger extravagance. He bought his wife a Lamborghini Urus, which is priced around $200,000, for their eight-year anniversary. He posted a video of gifting his wife the luxury vehicle. In a video, you can hear Gray say to his wife, “You light my fire. Let this Lamborghini light your fire, baby!”

There’s no shame in his game. The megachurch pastor responded to the backlash, “First of all, it wasn’t a pastor that bought the car. It was a husband that bought the car. I’m a husband first. Don’t confuse what I do with who I am. What I do is I pastor God’s people. Who I am is a husband and a father and I’ll do anything to honor them. And I won’t ask permission from anybody to do it.”

He also denied plundering money from the church treasury to purchase the vehicle.

The drama in Gray’s life isn’t limited to money. In case you missed it, Gray told the women of “The Real” in March, “Over a year ago, my wife and I were in a very difficult place in our marriage, and in that time, I began to converse with someone — other than a counselor, other than a pastoral leader, which is where I should have taken my issues and challenges — and began to converse, and I was even in the presence of that person one time. But being in the presence of someone is not the same as sleeping with them. I did not sleep with anyone.”
