She was accused of being the infamous 'Becky with the good hair' mentioned in Beyonce's album Lemonade.

As a result of the rumours, fashion designer Rachel Roy's email was hacked and even her phone number changed without permission.

But now, Rachel's ex-husband Damon Dash has come to her defence, going so far as to slam Beyonce and Jay-Z for not speaking out to quash the erroneous reports.

'They are cowards,' he told Grazia in an explosive new interview. 'They should have stepped up and said something.'

Speaking at the launch of his own television network Damon Dash TV, the entrepreneur and music producer said he and Rachel's daughters Tallulah and Ava have been harassed on social media as a result of the rumours surrounding their mother.

'Adults can go and harass a kid on behalf of an R & B singer?' he said. 'The trolls should have been put in jail for that, it was crazy.'

However, Damon, who fell out with Jay-Z in 2004 following the sale of their record company Roc-A-Fella, was more cryptic when asked by the magazine about the rumours of a past romance between Rachel and Jay-Z.

'I don't care what Rachel did, I don't agree with a lot of things she does,' he said, mysteriously.

Rachel, 42, was horrified when her Gmail and iCloud accounts were hacked in the days following Lemonade's release on April 23.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) were said to have obtained a search warrant for phone and email records and believed the perpetrator was a Beyonce fan, according to TMZ.com.

The mother-of-two was forced to deny accusations that she was 'Becky with the good hair,' but she believes it was the speculation among fans that directly led to her being hacked.

In documents seen by TMZ, Roy makes it clear she believes the hacking stemmed from her posting an Instagram photo just hours after Lemonade's debut.

She captioned it: 'Good hair don't care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. Live in the light #nodramaqueens'

As fans will remember, Beyonce sings about a love rival, who she describes as 'Becky with the good hair' in the song 'Sorry.'

The lyrics - 'He only want me when I'm not there/ He better call Becky with the good hair' - sparked a frenzy among fans as they speculated about who 'Becky' is.

Fans of the singer surmised that Rachel's picture on Instagram was her 'admitting' to being the Becky in question, which the designer vehemently denied.

'I want to put the speculation and rumors to rest,' she said, following the post. 'My Instagram post was meant to be fun and lighthearted, it was misunderstood as something other than that.

'There is no validity to the idea that the song references me personally. There is no truth to the rumors.'

Rachel went on to say that both she and her daughters have been the subject of online abuse in the wake of the Instagram post.

She added: 'Consequently, online haters have targeted me and my daughters in a hurtful and scary manner, including physical threats.

'As a mother – and I know many mothers would agree – I feel that bullying in any form is harmful and unacceptable.'

Rachel also appeared to address the Jay Z affair rumors on Twitter, when she wrote: 'I respect love, marriages, families and strength. What shouldn't be tolerated by anyone, no matter what, is bullying, of any kind.'

Rachel was also allegedly the reason behind the altercation between Beyonce's sister Solange and Jay-Z inside a lift after a Met Gala afterparty back in 2014.
