Raven-Symone Apologizes For 'Lack Of Empathy' After Discrimination Comments Of The View

Raven Symone Apologizes For Lack Of Empathy After Discrimination Comments Of The View
Date Posted: Monday, October 12th, 2015
Raven-Symoné is owning up to her mistake.

The View co-host admitted that her Thursday comments about racial name discrimination were "in poor taste" in a Facebook post Sunday.

During a discussion about the racist assumptions Americans make based on someone's name, Symoné said, "I'm very discriminatory against words like the ones they were saying in those names. I'm not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea," referencing a viral video the show played that listed the 60 most "ghetto names."

"My comments about discrimination have spun out of control," Symoné wrote Sunday.

The actress explained that she hadn't intended to attack a specific race and was merely quoting the popular clip.

"I have been denied many jobs because of my skin color, body size, and age," she said. "Each time I was rejected, my self esteem was negatively effected, so I empathize with those who feel victimized by what I said."

After last week's episode of The View aired, Symoné was attacked on social media for her statements. The star said that her commentary was just addressing "the truth."

"We would hope that when it comes to hiring, our names, physical appearance, sexual orientation, and age would never outweigh our qualifications, but often times, they do," she wrote.

Symoné admitted that her role as a public figure should be used to help find a solution, however, rather than further the problem. She added that as an employer, she has never discriminated against a name.

"My comment was in poor taste. My lack of empathy towards name discrimination was uncalled for," she said.

She also revealed that her Facebook account was hacked the day after the episode, writing "those are not my words." The posts in question appear to have been deleted.
