James Worthy Is The Next Breakout Music Producer
Date Posted: Tuesday, August 25th, 2015
Aspiring music artists come a dime a dozen in Atlanta, but not everyone looking to make it big in the industry has the talent and passion to make power moves. James Worthy is such an artist that has what it takes to rise through the ranks in the music world.

Worthy is taking his producing, songwriting, and acting skills to the next level. He has already worked with notable artists like Truth Hurts, Bobby Brown, Jr., Yung Berg, and former “Making the Band” star Sara Stokes, for whom he produced the hot track “Sneak Peak.” He describes his style of music as a mix of hip-hop/R&B, neo-soul, and urban.

Worthy will soon be featured on the Centric show “From the Bottom Up” along with Stokes. The opportunity will give him a chance to reach a larger audience and give his unique talent the attention it deserves.

The hard-working producer took time out to chat with rolling out and give us a glimpse of the man behind the music.

How did you arrive at this career choice? Was it a deliberate decision or a gradual and natural evolution?

I was always fascinated at the way music was made as a young child. While people were listening to the songs, I was researching the musicians. I later evolved into a producer from years of perfecting my craft.

What separates you from others in your field? What is unique to the experience that you create?

What sets me apart is the versatility I have for all genres of music. You may catch me working on an R&B record, and I’ll switch over to reggae, EDM [electronic dance music], or even rock. It’s a bold move to make in this business, but I’m a rebel in this game, so I believe music has no boundaries.

For those considering entering this arena, what skill sets do you recommend mastering? What traits are most conducive to success?

I would recommend studying the greats before your time, understanding what a producer does, and perfecting the strategy of your brand. There are so many variables to consider in the music industry, but innovating yourself is the key towards longevity.

How do you stay at the leading edge of your craft?

I always look for new ways to reinvent myself. I’ve never been one to follow the blueprint of someone else. By keeping faith in my music, I could never fall off the wagon.

How do you map out your goals? How do you measure your success?

I measure success by what I want to accomplish five years from now. [I’m] a visionary, so I map out things through all outlets of entertainment, which could be music, fashion, acting, or modeling.

Name two of your top role models-

Michael Jackson and Kanye West.

Name three books, works, performances or exhibits that changed how you view life and/or yourself-

A Tribe Called Quest: Midnight Marauders album, Dru Hill: Enter The Dragon album, Michael Jackson: Thriller album.

What software, app or other technological innovation has made the biggest difference in your life and/or career?

Pro-Tools.

Please define your personal brand-

I would define it as an experience. I’m more than music; I’m sound, I’m soul, I’m action, I’m an image, I’m inspirational to others, I’m James Worthy.

What is your favorite vacation destination and why?

London. The appreciation for music is like no other. I enjoy the vibe and energy presented.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

The justice system. Black lives matter.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Nothing. God made me perfect for me.

What does it take to be iconic? In your estimation, who has achieved that status?

It takes determination, passion, not being afraid to knock down doors, having faith in the craft, [and] inspiring people through your personality with soul. Michael Jackson has certainly achieved that.

What keeps you inspired?

Life.

How do you stay connected with fans?

Social media, meet and greets, panels, and email.

What’s on your playlist?

So much [laughs]. … Katy Perry, Kanye West, Maroon 5, Frank Ocean, and many others.
